Iran's attack on Israel is unprecedented. It is obviously and definitionally an act of direct war, after years of using proxies to attack Israel. The scale of the success of the allied defense against Iran's assault is near-miraculous. 🧵

And Iran should be grateful that defense worked. Iran is a terror state, and it is the leading cause of conflict in the region. Only the technological superiority of Israel's defenses, the intervention of the United States, and the coordination of Sunni states prevented the attack from starting World War III: if Iran had been successful, Israel would have had no choice but to devastate Iran.

Iran did this because they believed there was daylight between the Biden administration and Israel -- daylight created by the absurd position of the United States trying to stop Israel from finishing off Hamas.

Now, Biden is pressuring Israel not to respond directly to Iran, pretending that a successful defense is tantamount to a victory. It isn't. Such weakness only creates the appearance of daylight again -- yet another incentive for Iran's proxies to test the waters of aggression when the time is right.

So, what should happen next? Israel has three choices: 1. Israel could strike directly at Iran, demonstrating that it will not be treated as a punching bag. This would mean attacking Iran's oil refineries and nuclear facilities.  2. Israel could swivel and strike Hezbollah, Iran's top proxy in the region.  3. Israel could finish off Hamas, then turn to make a peace deal with Saudi Arabia.

The Biden administration is already broadcasting its dyspepsia about the first two options. The last option is the most likely, especially given that Israel will pursue a conclusion of its campaign in Rafah anyway. It is in the interest of Israel -- and the United States -- for Israel to truly finish off Hamas, then swivel and extend the Abraham Accords to Saudi Arabia, thus completing the formation of an anti-Iranian axis that will actually deter the Iranians from further aggression.

Defeating Hamas means removing one of Iran's chess pieces from the board. Concluding a peace deal with the Saudis would put the new Sunni-Israeli alliance in position to take other chess pieces off the board, too: the Houthis, Hezbollah, even the Iranian Navy. All of that would be the best retaliation against Iran -- and Iran knows it, which is why they activated Hamas for October 7.

All this requires is for the Biden administration to do what it hasn't for weeks: let Israel win.
