I look at it like switches, in that left state (open) itโ€™s off, and the right state (closed) itโ€™s on

When a door is closed it is ON. When it is open it is OFF. The door is not the same as a doorway. The door's job is to close the doorway and so when it's working it is ON. Boring I know but there you go.

A door is to neither block passage or allow passage. Itโ€™s to โ€˜controlโ€™ passage. As such, itโ€™s always โ€˜onโ€™ in any state.

If the doors only function is to allow passage, then why have them? A doorโ€™s function is to restrict passage, is a better phrase. So when itโ€™s closed, itโ€™s doing its job of restricting that passage, so it is in fact ON.

A passage way is to allow passage. A door being in a passage way is to restrict passage. Therefore, closed door is ON

When a door is closed it is engaged and so is on. When you disengage the door it is open and thus off
