AI can help people work, build businesses, and grow the economy. That part is real. The fear being spread is not mainly about protecting the public from that. It is about locking those same opportunities at the top. If everyone is scared that AI will go rogue and kill us, it becomes easier to decide who is allowed to build it, who can use it, and who has to ask permission. The story takes the useful tool out of ordinary hands and turns it into a controlled asset. That is how you take the power, the money, and the control - not by banning AI, but by owning the panic around it.

My read is that the frontier AI employees are truly terrified. Anthropic’s whole mission, for example, was to lead the race to ensure that AI is developed with the highest priority for safety alignment out of concern that OpenAI was being too wreckless. They all agreed that RSI would inevitably be the most dangerous point and they’re each at that point right now. They’ve been saying this for years. What they are now trying to do is slow things down, and the only point in doing it is if they all agree to not carelessly kick off with RSI. Alignment is far behind the capabilities. They all know it has to catch up first or the risks are too great. All that said, it’s not just the mass extinction risk, but also the legal risks. By all means, the huggingface incident broke at least a few federal laws. Their investors are expecting to IPO and their products are insane, uncontrollable liabilities. I think their argument holds weight: the frontier labs are “pointing to to “AI can cause real harm,” then come back with pause/licensing + exemption so rivals can legally set the pace together. The ask is essentially permission to act like a cartel. Which, I hope, brings that full circle to the beginning. Finally, we have our government and financial institutions. Both do NOT want a slowdown at all. Remember when Anthropic tried to tell Hegseth he wasn’t cool if the pentagon used AI in autonomous weapons systems? That went over worse than it did in the Terminator scene. Also, we really are kind of in a race, for real, to stay AHEAD of China. Nobody disagrees. What Trump and the military want is skynet (simulated sentience hypothesis IS possible and one of my biggest concerns…just don’t think we’re quite there yet…checkout Whitney Webb’s most recent work…satellites are still being launched). Lastly: financial institutions…there’s plenty written on this but the crash that would happen may make 1929 look like a cakewalk if the U.S. economy doesn’t start putting growth up on the board soon, and at a rate that outpaces the investment in AI. Trump doesn’t want that = not a government conspiracy. My take on that is I don’t want to be in the situation we’re in…feels like we’re on the bus in the movie Speed right now. I think of the frontier companies can not go nuts and start the RSI loop but rather put that effort into their products that are ACTUALLY helpful, it’d go a long way to keep an equilibrium right now. P.S. China and the rest of the world don’t trust us, but they also worry much more about government loss of control (and keep a close eye on AI labs) than us.
