It’s not 100% safe. But that’s ok, no country in the world is. Though, El Salvador has improved greatly in recent years.

I'd say it's as safe as a USA suburb. No violence. If you leave stuff lying around, it could disappear. Lock your door at night to prevent a quick snatch and grab. Lock things up like you would in most places in the world. Tell the panhandlers "no" and they'll leave you alone. Throw out a "buenos dias" or "buenas tardes" if normal people are looking at you as a gringo, and get ready for a smile or a wave!😀🇸🇻
