"Is it conceivable that the King made those comments? We have seen that he's got a temper." Rage, fury and a rare royal intervention. Could the King really have said it? emily m | Jon Sopel

@maitlis @jonsopel Ofcourse it is very conceivable! You cannot rewrite King Charles history. He was an adulterer who made his mistress queen! Princess Diana’s death was a big relief to Charles and the royal family!

I imagine the King continues to be perplexed at the popularity of the late Princess of Wales, even almost 30 years after her death. Whatever one thinks of Charles Spencer choosing to write the book, the intervention from the Palace seems in the same slightly snide mental-health rationality questioning vein as was used to try and discredit Diana herself. Either just deny saying it outright through 'sources' or don't say anything.

@maitlis @jonsopel Charles’ petulant temper has always been well documented His ability to blow up in seconds & come back down has been a constant record…over decades The Palace reacted quickly to Earl Spencer’s book It didn’t respond this quickly about Andrew The Palace is clearly panicking

@Uniquelovely9 @maitlis @jonsopel Stop pretending William is any different from Charles. The guy weaponised mental health against his own mother. He jumped into bed with the same media barons who chased his mother to her death.

@maitlis @jonsopel Charles’s friends spread the word — even on TV — that Diana was paranoid. Charles had Penny Junor write a book in which Diana was portrayed, among other things, as having a borderline personality. Why wouldn’t he have said that she would soon be forgotten?

@maitlis @jonsopel And yet Queen Elizabeth sued several publications and issued a ‘recollections may vary’- the never complain wasn’t a blanket thrown over every issue and people need to stop pretending it was. Sometimes extraordinary events require extraordinary responses!

@maitlis @jonsopel She said there were three people in the marriage - he shouldn't have married her in the first place

@maitlis @jonsopel Did he say Earl Spencer was a vile human being? Geez.

@maitlis @jonsopel

@maitlis @jonsopel I thought you guys were better than this.

@maitlis @jonsopel Sopel the most conceited journalist by a long stretch, what a horrible cunt he is.

@maitlis @jonsopel Surprised @jonsopel said Westminster Cathedral, the Catholic Church in Victoria, instead of Westminster Abbey, where the funeral actually took place

@maitlis @jonsopel

@maitlis @jonsopel Who cares?
