Everyone wants to manage the people doing the work not do the actual work. We have a middle management problem... Im a tradesman and in my experience there is more job superintendents and project managers than actual trades people.

Part of it is my generation (last letter of the bet’) was hounded to go to college. They want us to go to 4 years. It helps everyone but yourself financially. I remember being called a failure in HS for not going to college. Trade schools have to get pushed more on the next gen.

Several factors play into it: lower wages, limited perceived career growth, and the cultural myth that college is the only route to success. On top of that, manual labor is unfairly stigmatized as unintelligent work.

I work in a factory, the new 22yr old we hired last week put in his 2 week notice because starting work at 6AM is too early for him. People have gotten soft and used to not doing sh*t since covid, that's when I really noticed the work force attitude change.

I'm 40 and have worked construction since I was 17. Most kids have no desire to get off of their video games and work hard. These new kids have never fixed a bicycle, worked on a lawn mower, or tinkered with anything in the garage. Screen time is destroying society.

Trump's tariff deal, I think, is to get these other countries to lower THEIR tariffs, not necessarily to keep ours high. He wants American businesses to be able to successfully sell all over the world, and he also wants things made here so we are completely self-sufficient, which is smart. In case of any unrest or natural disaster. So right now you see a couple things happening- other countries who don't want a barrier to the US market are negotiating to get the tariffs lowered, companies are bringing production here or ramping up existing manufacturing. I see this as a win win. I don't know why these economists can't see this. They seem unable to see the big picture.

It’s definitely the pay. Our machinists cant compete on non-specialized components due to the low cost of chinese manufacturing. By making chinese parts more expensive, tariffs enable our machine shops to be competitive. When they win local business, they need to grow, and when they need people they will pay more money for them. They dont need people cause they’re not winning enough business, on average, so pay is low. Tariffs are the fastest solution to the whole problem IMO.
