I disagree. Frank, you often respond to a moral objection to behavior in the scriptures by saying “the Bible can be descriptive without being prescriptive.” Why aren’t you considering this here? Abraham lied, Jacob lied, the midwives lied, they all benefited from those lies but God never explicitly condoned a lie that I’m aware of. Are white lies ok? If my wife asks me an opinion about her outfit and I lie to protect her feelings, I have voluntarily distorted her (and others) perception of reality in some small way to benefit what I determined to be a justified ends. Who am I or you to determine the ends.? All we have is the means. Greater absolutism is wrong. I believe it’s a sin to lie ever. Saving innocents isn’t of greater importance than lying. Tyrants can’t succeed without otherwise righteous men, “lying for the sake of the innocent.” If tyrants arrive at my door asking questions I have a duty to oppose them with my own life first and others if necessary. The correct response to Nazis at your door who are searching for Jews is defiance not lies. If that leads to a seemingly horrible outcome then so be it. I choose to not ever consciously lie again and let the chips fall where they may. If I lie for what I perceive as a greater good, then the consequences are on me. If my refusal to deliberately manipulate truth leads to suffering or death, then that’s on God.

Frank, was lying about performing CPR from the 3rd row on 9/10/25 morally wrong in your mind? How about lying about a 9 hour FT call while somehow also calling Hibbs from a phone that was in the back of your blook soaked clothes as you wore hospital scrubs as well. We'll wait.

What about the gal in the Bible who hid the Israelite spies by lying to the men of Jericho (Rahab I believe). She’s a forebear of Jesus Christ. In rare cases it alright. That said the exception doesn’t change the rule.

I'm allowed by God to KILL a person to protect my life or the life of another person, given that, why would lying to someone to protect a life be wrong? If I was in Nazi Germany, hiding Jews in my house, and the SS knocked on my door and asks if I knew of any Jews hiding in the area are you really going to say it would immoral to tell them I didn't know of any?

When you preach on the virtues of lying, ask yourself if Jesus ever lied. Paul said to emulate Jesus. Paul also said Christians are not permitted to lie about anything. You have a different standard than Jesus and The Bible.

As you stated, it depends on what you mean by a lie. Here is a three pronged test that I apply: 1. Is the statement false? 2. Does the person making the statement know it is false? 3. Is the person making the statement for personal gain? Under this test, the midwives did not lie. Those hiding Jews from Nazis did not lie. In both cases the false statement was not made for personal gain. They told untruths. They knew they were untruths. In both cases they did not benefit. In fact they risked great harm to themselves. All lies are untruths. Not all untruths are lies.

Would Jesus tell a little white Lie? Also, the Ten Commandments are not the only place in the Bible that deals with lying. The new Testament has several commands not to lie.

Ten Commandments specifically says "against your neighbor". Just like remembering the Sabbath command, it specifically says you shall work 6 days. Why doesn't everyone read the complete description of the commands?
