The key to understanding Ukraine is to accept that there is no "single unified Ukraine". Even when unity was being promoted, they had to say it in two opposing languages - Єдина країна, Одиная Строна. So when Putin says that Russians and Ukrainians are one nation, he is partially right. As the Cossack constitution begins: "Ми народ малоросійскій" - "We the nation of Lower Russians / Lower Russian people". Even their language and the language of Galicia / Red Ruthenia, Podolia, were different like Polish and Croatian. The theory of the "Ukrainian ethnic lands" is a myth of internalized Russian propaganda.
