Is that a valid argument

I dunno, when I was a teen, two weeks was for "good standing," as in if you ever want to come back to the same job in the near future. No one seriously expected you to give two weeks notice if you quit. Most people just quit, not expecting to come back, anyway.

But for reference, you have to leave on a good note except you don’t see a potential of using that job in future reference

I think there's a law against saying anything bad about previous employees. It might be by state, though and not a federal law. And it's kind of silly to use a reference that you know you left on a bad note. Most applications (when they did it on paper) asked if they could call your previous employer.

@better_men Cept in trucking. Seen plenty of cases mega carriers (jb hunt swift western express) putting false things in reports on drivers. These reports stay and are seen by future companies for up to 5 yrs in some cases

@better_men I wonder if the truckers have recourse, but it isn't worth the effort. Defamation is illegal, and they can sue for that.

This whole thing is irrelevant. When you get a job you sign the contract including how much notice you are to give each other.

When I suddenly quit I said, "I gave you two weeks to notice, and you failed. Byeee!" Very satisfying.

Unless the termination is for gross misconduct companies on average give more than seven weeks pay in severance. The argument is asking for something less than what already exists and pretending it's a clever new idea.

employers do offer ongoing compensation after termination. its called severance. if you want your employer to give you a good referral, then maintaining courtesy is expected. if you come in with the expectation of being fired for cause, then you have already abandoned courtesy.

Absolutely NOT! If I’m going to fire you for stealing, I’m not giving you 7 more weeks to steal more! If you are late consistently, you are fired on the spot, not given 7 weeks to be late! You don’t get 7 weeks to be insubordinate or do a shitty job after you show unprofessionalism.

I once asked the owner of a Machine shop to do this for me, I was young and not sure what field I wanted to be in, he agreed to give me a two week notice, he ultimately reneged on it, I brought in my buddy who was in a 1% club and long story short, he gave me 2 weeks severance 🤣

Don't you have employment contracts in the States?

Better Men's profile picture

Most of the contracts favor the employer

I've always found it fairly equal but that's what my union is for. They look out for my employment rights, but fortunately I've never needed to go to them for a contractual dispute. Never had cause to.

The boss could argue he doesn't need 7 weeka to find a new job.

I’d argue differently so it’d be superior argument… in an alternate universe tho🤣

2 weeks is crazy though. Where I live, you have at least 4 weeks when you become a fulltime employee (after 6 months). The longer you work, the higher your safety. If my employer were to fire me, they'd have to give me a 6 month notice.

I’ve never giving 2 week notice in my life .

I used to think 2 weeks notice was that the company told you 2 weeks before they got rid of you. I was a kid when layoffs with the 2008 crash made me realize that 2 weeks notice was about the person quiting not getting let go.

Thats asking for potential trouble on the side of the employer, especially if an employee has access to confidential information or accounts. Telling them, "hey we are firing you in 7 weeks," just lets those who would seek to destroy the company from within more time to do so.

You get a two day notice when it’s time for me to go. Damn autocorrect. Today notice.

Two weeks' notice shows self-respect and honors my commitment. It says more about my character than my employer.

Never give no job 2 weeks notice cause they’ll always fire you on the spot no matter what and won’t let you get unemployment

We have laws for this. In Germany it’s 4 weeks both ways. Depending on how long you‘ve been at a company, the employer must give more notice, up to 6 months for long-term employees

I once interviewed with a UK based org that was expanding to the US. HR rep asked me how much notice I was giving current employer. She was so shocked that US culture was only 2 weeks notice that she ended the interview

I think it is pretty valid. Everyone is so broke that any amount of time without a job could lead to serious consequences.

It would be nice. It's always a 1-way street...kind of like when the company/gov't needs money from you they take it instantly. For you..... 7-10 business days.

With the exception of illegal or explicit activity, this seems reasonable.
