Well, speaking from my own experience, our 7 year old shepherd - whom we’ve had for 7 years - has been amazingly gentle, loving and kind… unless you’re at the door, in my yard or entering without making yourself known. Then she barks a lot and guards. Sweet as pie, but don’t try to hurt me.

They’re freaking wonderful. I had so many in my life, they are a lot of work but it’s worth it, they are very protective and smart but if you’re a good dog owner who’s not lazy you’ll be fine. My dad trained them as a k9 cop and they are really really awesome but just know you can’t slack

I have a ten year old GS. You won’t find a more protective breed. I wouldn’t recommend getting a pure breed. They have hip problems and can get fistulas. My GS had fistulas since she was two. The only thing that has kept her alive is the medication that she’s on.
