He is doing what’s called a zipper merge. Makes no sense to leave a lane unused and backup the line even more.

Some people love to drive slow and sit in traffic he probably just saved 20 mins of time

Yes that's how merges are supposed to work

Both “the right way” and “the one everyone hates” This is due to the fact no one fucking understands how to zipper merge.

Cool if I do it, not cool if I see someone else doing it 😂

The fact he did it quickly and smoothly and didnt cause any hold ups makes this fine. Its when people try to force their way in and create traffic behind them where it becomes rude as hell.

The lost art of the zipper merge. I’ll do that in my personal truck all day long. Cope and seethe.🤷🏼‍♀️

hes in the right but more importantly IMO: why are all the other cars *not* zippering?

If they wanted you to merge a mile back, they would have put the cones back there!

Everybody here is wrong, this is not a "zipper merge." Zipper implies one person from each lane goes in a sequence like a freaking zipper. Not zipping in front of the traffic to merge ahead of a line of people by using a lane thats closed ahead.

Studies show, zippering at the actual merge is the most efficient process. It’s nonsense for people to zipper a mile or two ahead of time and they get mad when others use an open lane. You don’t cut people off at the end, but it’s fine to merge at the natural convergence.

Everyone hates him, but no laws broken. Seems like a good driver, to me.

People queue up to be polite, then this asshole shows up. Also, as more people do this it causes the line to slow down more.

100% correct. driver is using the roadspace. it wasn't built with tax payer money just for looking at. most people see waiting in long lines as a form of moral superiority.

Everyone who thinks this guy is wrong should drive the speed of traffic in the open lane and zipper merge at the end of the open lane. Best solution that is fair for everyone.

Everybody hates that guy because they didn't do it like he did. That was perfect. The flashing arrow indicated to "merge" and merge he did.

He is both ... Nothing requires you to merge until the merge... But also, we hate him.

I dont care what people do Claiming it changes the rate of traffic through a single lane post merge is genuinely delusional. Just tell people the real reason, it allows for more safety buffer as long as the vehicle density is the same per road mile (no difference if backed up)

He's both merging the right way and the guy everyone hates. Because most people are so risk adverse and sheep minded that they wouldn't do it.

This IS NOT zipper merging. The sped up video shows him cutting off a van & hitting his breaks. He rushed ahead to save maybe 5 minutes. He causes dozens of cars behind him to hit their breaks & stop. This type of driving is why traffic jams or slows unnecessarily.

Honestly if they can do it that smoothly I don’t really care, it’s when they stop everyone else to get in, then it’s annoying

For several years I drove off the mountain into downtown Denver for work. I used to fight these dudes, it was selfish and rude to drive like that then a local road rage incident left one women dead and a guy, other a normal law abiding citizen going to prison for manslaughter, and I like of guilt is imagine. Anyway after that and to this day, I don’t care. You want to cut in front of me, knock yourself out, I’ll let you in and not think another second about it. Life is too short.

Yes that is the correct way to merge, though unless video is sped up he shouldn’t be going quite so fast next to stopped traffic. Idiots that force merging sooner just create far longer backups. You’re not “polite” you’re just an idiot.

A and C. Everyone hates it, but it’s the correct way to merge. Everyone trying to merge early is what causes all the traffic by wasting 90% of the space in the left lane. A good zipper merge should go right up until you run out of room so that the max amount of space is taken up!

Profilbild von Richie Rich
Richie Richvor 9 Monaten

That is the “correct” way. Where the lanes come together should stagger, car in through lane, merging car, car in through lane and so on. Is called a “zipper merge”.

Use all lanes and then alternate, correct.

zipper method is the correct way to do it, they even write it in rulebooks.
