So why do movies not set in a city still look terrible? Reddit tier nonsense

No. Color palette homoginization has been occurring since before 1970. Many causes: toxins in vibrant paints means fewer paint choices, fewer colors available means cost savings for paint producers mean less inventory to carry, globalization of cinema to include equatorial populations with desert palettes blah blah blah

Do you think those old movies lit their film with street lights?

It's quite amazing how people can be so confident saying something so ridiculous. Movies don’t use street lights for lighting, and that still doesn’t explain the lights on movie sets. Movies use lights made specifically for filmmaking; those lights have multiple lenses to shape the quality of light, plus various gels to create baked-in colour effects. In fact, cinematography is one of the most complex and highly skilled crafts on a movie set. You work with a gaffer, multiple lights and lenses, and need a deep understanding of how light affects a scene. Very precise lighting is created using artificial lights. It is extremely rare to use in-house lights for a scene—and even then, it’s usually a deliberate creative decision. If you see a scene with office lighting, all the ceiling lights are typically replaced by cinema-grade lights to avoid green tint and flicker.

No. Movies use movie lights. They can be whatever colour light the director chooses. The “look” of movies is the choice of the director. If they look muddy compared to older, brighter lit movies, it’s because the directors believe it’s a better style. Maybe more realistic looking.

It’s because the Arri Alexa was released around 2010, and most directors switched to the digital Arri Alexa. It’s very simple. Even comedy movies in 2009 and earlier looked great, because they were actually filmed on film.

Yes. LEDs also are bad for your brain. There is a flashing that happens at thousands of times a second which fucks up your head. Studies haven't been "clinically, or peer reviewed" yet, but studies from the 1970's show how florescent light agitates children. Take of that what you will.

Nightcrawler was made in 2014 and it doesn't look like a YouTube video. He's off the mark.

First thing you should do after purchasing a TV is calibrating the picture settings This can easily be fixed by: 1. Turn on power saver 2. Put picture mode on cinema 3. Turn picture settings to warm I've never had to notice that phenomenal he's mentioning of color grading

No he's an emboldened zoomillennial farming for attention. It's largely the general disdain for visual storytelling and the preference for commercial standards, often over produced. Lynch movies shot on digital are still compelling.

Nice data, but movies now suck mainly due to bad scripts and absurd casting

No. The camera we used today has a huge hdr range for post grading. The exec & producers want washed color because that's the zetgeist (probably cheaper & quicker too). A24 Materialist & Past Lives still has sharp shadow, because they want to color grade it that way.

No it's because the real talented cinematographers and lighting directors are retired or dead; and the younger ones in "the sorority" don't have a 1/32th of their talent or artistry....

it's just random nonsense plus industry trends. this guy doesn't know anything 😭 many movies past 2011 have great cinematography, it just depends on whether or not the ppl in charge of the movie care abt making it visually striking

There were no street lights involved with shooting Wicked though. That said, he’s basically just saying it’s due to LED lighting and I agree.

wrong about the old sodium bulbs being less energy efficient than LED bulbs - They are about the same, or sodium is a little better.

This is soo not true. I mean the quality from movies since 2010 has dropped (personal opinion), there have been some great ones with really good lightenig. We have dune 2, interstellar, the revenant, mad max fury road, blade runner 2049,etc

No. It’s because all of the actors are now gay, men dressed as woman, or woman dressed as men. That’s why the movies are ugly.

No, this guy’s an idiot. The fact he thinks Drive was the last aesthetically pleasing film should discount everything he has to say about movies, because that is insane.

Hunterakagman's profile picture

The real reason is politics. Hollywood is extremely left wing and has several misanthropic groups of people that have no interest in making good movies because they view you as evil and/or stupid. And given how much money they still make, they might be right on the latter end.

Jonas's profile picture

Total bullshit. Cinematographers have total control over both the color and softness of their LED lights. The problem is that because studios and directors want to be able to change their minds mid-production, scenes are lit flat as fuck.

Partially. There are other reasons. This doesn’t explain why background and foregrounds look different.
