Is this why our children aren't being taught cursive anymore?

I always told my kids they needed to learn to read cursive or they wouldn't be able to read the Constitution. In Animal Farm, the pigs kept changing the "rules" painted on the side of the barn but the other animals forgot and couldn't read.

Honestly, no. Can we stop pretending that plain text versions of all the literature and historical documents and the laws aren't fully available? Further, nobody is stopping people from being able to read it. What's of greater concern is the lack of reading comprehension and critical thinking.

I taught my 10 year old. She’s using it in the real world and she is super proud to have the skill.

No, these may be the short term consequences of not teaching cursive, but cursive was done away with because school systems, governments and teachers are lazy. They thought it is better to type, since everyone is on computers now. It makes it easier for them to grade, analyze, and store documents. And yes, we need to teach cursive again. It develops fine manual dexterity. Plus, note taking and writing in cursive improves memory retention.

Quill pens were the main reason cursive became popular. Quills are fragile, splatter easily, and ink dries fast. Lifting the pen constantly risked breaking the tip or wasting ink. Cursive lets you keep the pen on the paper, writing faster and smoother.

AI can read cursive. I know because when I need to write things quickly I use cursive, I'm no good at typing. AI translates my cursive into text. It's a really nice tool for someone that was taught both cursive and touch typing and the typing skill never happened well no matter how much I practiced, but cursive is my default because who has time to write pages by hand in print?

Complete nonsense. Modern AI can absolutely decipher cursive writing. Schools didn't remove mandatory cursive writing courses because, "laws are written in cursive." They likely did so because too few students - and adults - ever write in cursive anymore. There's a case to be made for the advantage of learning to read and write in cursive, but this ain't it.

My son is in second grade here in a small country town in Alabama where we live. They never stopped teaching cursive here.

Depends on location; it's still required in many states. I learned in 3rd grade and still write, but that was in the 60s. Kids now learn, but teachers in upper grades let it slide in favor of hand or computer printed essays, etc.

Everything is already online though, so the point about not being able to read it is mute. Good luck scrubbing it, the Internet is forever.

BS. The fact is that cursive is pretty much irrelevant. Kids should learn how to type instead of learning cursive. We are a digital computer based society. Many people can read it but they don't write it. People don't learn shorthand anymore either.
