Is university really worth it anymore?

@elliehodges62 Have to agree. Unless the degree is required for a profession, it’s often not worth the time and debt people go into for it. Starting life £50-£100k in debt is not great.

@elliehodges62 You can learn many things for free, online AIs are great learning devices. None of my kids are going to Uni. Its not as if there are any jobs any way Uni used to be paid for, for those with the competence, now it is open to all because of Tony Blair, and people get in debt

@elliehodges62 In the UK students are saddled with debt. In Poland, for example, universities are still free like they used to be in Britain. So how can Poland run an excellent state system and the UK not? Why do people pay their taxes just to see billions being spent on foreigners?

@elliehodges62 It has always been like this, but new labour had a great marketing department that everyone brought into. Vast majority of jobs don't need a degree, but it's become something you'll need to get past recruitment filtering for any real or psuedo white collar jobs.

I did my degree before the rise of the internet and stuff. All essays had to be written longhand! Everything was in the library. Every quote, idea and ’fact’ had to be referenced. Primary sources had to be found, books by the hundredweight had to be carried! lol - it was hard work, but glorious! I’d do it all again the exact same way, but would I now? No, I don’t think so.. (I was in the very first cohort to have to pay tuition fees - They were nothing like as bad as current fees, but I still left uni owing £19k, which was enough!)

@elliehodges62 Yes don't be a fool in school, real world experience is best, I did it and retired at 42. As long as you can read, write and know some math.

@elliehodges62 She's right. Far better to spend a year working for a company for free than spending 3 years at university. When you have a degree and had your first job, your second employer won't care what you did at university and it will be all about your experience.

@elliehodges62 Degree = work, has always been the misconception even before our current economic predicament. Knowing a career and what learning is required and pursuing it has generally led to a career.

@elliehodges62 I went to Uni as a mature student to read English and History. At our very first lecture, we were told, quite categorically, that a degree would not guarantee us a job. It was about so much more than just a career prospect. They were right.

It's not been worth it for 20 years. Waste of money. Experience is more valuable to employees. The debt and repayment is just extra tax. The courses are dog shit, with no granular expert detail (90% of courses), so you leave with the knowledge you could have gained yourself in a year or self study. And the best and brightest no longer go to uni, it's just any tom, dick and harry who can get in, which has totally removed it's accumen and value.

@elliehodges62 45% of young people go to uni 15% of all jobs here in the UK are uni graduate grade jobs So basically 2/3rds of people that go to uni are wasting time/ money for nothing

@elliehodges62 i agree with what you say i think there should be a 3 year intern route in companys offered instead of uni to learn a job/role i think if someone has the aptitude to do a job why get a degree in it when you can just go straight into learning the role
