There are going to be a lot more services layoffs like Verizon. ISM told us that with their backlogs index hitting 2009 lows in two of the last three months. It's one thing if you don’t have enough new sales coming in. You can work down the existing business, the backlogs to keep your workforce busy in the meantime until sales pick back up. No need to lay people off, just keep production and work volumes up for the time being. Companies tried to maintain their payrolls, but you can see from the ISM data all that did was accelerate the decline in backlogs right on into job cutting.
