“Jin” is the proper theological terminology, not the cartoon version of rub a bottle. I believe in Arabic it is referred to as an “Ifrit”. If we mock them let’s understand the belief system as ridiculous as it may sound to a westernized mind. Ifrit, also spelled as efreet, afrit, and afreet (Arabic: عفريت, romanized: ʿifrīt, lit. '[ʕifriːt]' (listenⓘ), plural عفاريت ʿafārīt), is a powerful type of demon in Islamic culture. The ʿafārīt are often associated with the underworld and identified with the spirits of the dead, and have been compared to evil geniī loci in European culture. In Quran, hadith, and Mi'raj narrations the term is always followed by the phrase "among the jinn". In later folklore, they developed into independent entities, identified as powerful demons or spirits of the dead who sometimes inhabit desolate places such as ruins and temples. Their true habitat is the Jahannam or underworld.

Iranian leader Khameini himself is an outspoken and longstanding proponent of the idea that Jinn are used by the enemies of Iran to wreak havoc. He even blamed the spread of coronavirus on foreign influenced Jinn. See - and keep in mind, these aren’t spirits living in a magic lamp and granting wishes. These are demon-like beings. Some are good, some are bad and Muslim teenagers are obsessed with them. It’s really kind of fascinating. My Mom who was born in Morocco, where according to Pew, belief in Jinn is at 66% - used to caution me against whistling indoors bc it would attract the Jinn. So I can’t really make too much fun of Khameini, but still, what a bunch of f*cking tools.
