It is what happened on October 8 and October 9, and on all the days since, on Western campuses, in Western schools, and in Western media outlets. The way the West has reacted, in particular young people, all across this country and in Europe, to the horrors of October 7, has been as disappointing to so many of us as it was surprising because it misses the point. The point is that the October 7 attacks were not just attacks on Jews or Israelis alone; they were part of a broader war for the heart and soul of Western civilization.

For years to come, this tree will remind us all not only of the horrors of October 7 but the strength and endurance of the Jewish people.
