It’s important to clarify that this isn’t about color — there are Black Jews and also legal African immigrants who live great lives in Israel. Ethiopians actually have a long and complicated history with those who entered the country illegally. The countries they came from did capture Ethiopian Jews who tried to cross the desert into Israel by foot, and they abused, raped, and killed them in concentration camps. There’s also growing concern among both Ethiopian Jews and non-Jews about intermarriage with people from those countries, as it risks diluting the Jewish lineage, especially within religious families.
