Israel has successively occupied North Gaza, Rafah, and Khan Younis, sealing them off, and razing them to the ground. Yet it has failed in its strategic aim — the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from all of Gaza. Malley pushes back, reminding him the book also describes Israel’s mass killing in Gaza, which growing numbers of genocide scholars classify as genocide, as “Israeli through and through.” Malley states that nothing about either society is innate or essentialist.
