Boko Haram claims victory over ISWAP in new video By: Zagazola Makama Boko Haram on Wednesday released a video taunting the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) over recent clashes in the northeast. In the four-minute video, a Boko Haram member, appearing to speak on behalf of the group, claimed that their fighters had defeated ISWAP in a recent confrontation, asserting that “God will continue to defeat them.” The speaker challenged those claiming that ISWAP had the upper hand, urging them to provide evidence through their Telegram or WhatsApp handles to substantiate such claims. He further stated that in the recent encounter, ISWAP brought eight boats, all of which were captured or destroyed by Boko Haram, resulting in numerous casualties. Only a few militants reportedly escaped with two boats, according to the video. The release of the video comes amid week long intensified clashes between Boko Haram and ISWAP in Borno and surrounding states, illustrating ongoing internal rivalry between the extremist factions.

Impressive Nigeria Troops recovered heavy fire power from ISWAP in the NE, one important to note is that, the ISWAP are now using JNIM tactics used in Burkinafaso and Mali, the heavy calibre of weapons used by the group on motorcycle is part of the strategy deployed by JNIM fighters before they defected to ISGS. It is also important to note that we are seeing some level of cooperation between ISGS and ISWAP, another evidence is the Niger Republic Airport attack.

The group in the video appears to be based in the Lake Chad area under the authority of the JAS overall leader Bakura Doro, aka Abu Umaymah. The speaker begins by calling ISWAP apostates and deviants, and tells them not to rejoice over the death of Abu Bakr al-Shekawi (Shekau). As a reminder, Shekau blew himself up in 2021 when he was cornered by ISWAP in the Sambisa Forest. ISWAP had called upon him with loudspeakers to surrender, but he refused. He adds that after Shekau there are many other Shekaus who don’t die and don’t change, and who follow his ways and teachings, and will remain until the Day of Judgement. He calls ISWAP deviants for not considering regular Muslim civilians apostates for living in territories controlled by the Nigerian government, which JAS describes as “the general of the polytheists”. This is a major difference between JAS (Boko Haram) and ISWAP, as the latter only sees the military, their auxiliaries, and Christians who don’t pay the jizyah as legitimate targets. By contrast, JAS views everyone living under the “apostate governments” as legitimate targets, which is the reason behind the recent bombings in Maiduguri by JAS. The speaker then addresses ISWAP again, urging them to repent before JAS destroys them, and says that if they do, they will be safe from them.
