“It can be done with baked lighting.” “Same can be achieved with SSR.” “Just use reflection probes.” “Baked GI looks just as good.” “You don’t need RT for accurate reflections.” “You can barely tell the difference.”

So you're trying to convince me RT isn't worth it? Because that's exactly what this video comparison is showing.

It's still not worth the performance just to see *some* of it in real gameplay. Cyberpunk was the only game i saw with considerably better graphics with RT

Yaaaayyy i get to see my own reflections for 30 seconds for HALF the fps for the whole game 🤩

the answer is if I have a significantly smoother experience on my machine with it off I'm playing with it off :P

all boils down to whether or not the art direction has RT in mind clearly this does given it has so many reflective surfaces and dynamic lighting Cyberpunk same thing. But not every game needs it and some would absolutely be better off with no ray tracing at all

Yes because having more accurate reflections on windows TOTALLY change your game experience

Man if you play a game to look at this shit i think you just dont like videogames and thats fine

The bottom is more realistic. Why would there be a mirror on a store display window and why would it be clean and polished

why are you making a list of good arguments against lazy rasterization work?

Tom Clancy's The Division, a game made 10 years ago, has the same reflections, without RTX.

You do not need RT; This is example of classic within farcry1 of env bump mapping with use of mirror camera In past it was really expensive to render full reflection scene from mirror camera - but right now we are doing something even more expensive.

Remedy games and the last two Assassin's creed games are the only ones I care about RT in as they are actually designed with them in mind.

rt on isn't worth it, your fps gonna drops a lot in intense fight with rt on, the game already looks great without it, unless you doing some screenshot for show, rt on is not worth at all

It looks cool, but it's certainly diminishing returns at this point. The bottom one looks good already (save for the god awful SSR). It's only my opinion, but this shouldn't take over half my FPS because I'm not gonna be looking at my reflections in the middle of combat.

only reason devs are obsessed with RT is because it makes their job easier and saves the studio time and money. not because it benefits the consumer in anyway

there is static GI, so yes, you CAN optimize this scene, using rt for reflections would be enough

What game?

SSR is hard to replace in raster. Render to texture reflection become expensive with these geo and fx designs. But the rest has a ..lot! ... of raster alternatives. Just check Battlefronts PSCC / HFTS shadows. Baked GI is not so dynamic. But probes could work.

The glass is sooo pretty

DLSS and PhysX are better tech than RT for real time gaming.

the real question is: “is it worth loosing 200fps or not?” and the answer is obviously no.

You only need to look at the glass to see that RT is worth it

Top has HDR bottom SDR

Took me forever to realize what the difference even was. Na RT is so unnecessary. Never worth the performance dip.

For reflections ray tracing give something SSR cant do. But good lighting can be done without RT. RT is just easier and more accurate but Wayyy heavier too.

U blind look at the reflection on that glass wall

The problem is developers are putting less and less effort into the non RT version of games. I'm not saying the non RT version can be better or just as good, but it can come very close.
