They grew up watching immigrants show up, learn English, hustle for work, and raise kids who turned out fully American. That was their experience. It convinced them assimilation was just how it worked no matter where people came from. But the welfare state expanded massively and started paying folks to stay separate instead of forcing them to join the culture and contribute. And we’re now pulling in millions from places where the values, trust levels, and basic worldview clash hard with American ideas about individual responsibility, rule of law, and getting along in a high trust society. So the old boomer assumption doesn’t match the incentives we’ve created or the people we’re letting in anymore.

Integration rarely happens, because it isn't just about culture or values. Think of culture as software, and people as hardware. You cannot download software onto incompatible hardware. Software is produced on hardware. Cultures come from peoples. Their family formation and heritage prejudice which culture and values seem intuitive to them. Tge wrong software can permanently ruin your hardware. You cannot transplant an alien culture wholesale onto peoples who didn't invent it, and to whom it isn't intuitive. We don’t have England without Christianity. We also don't have England without the English people. The software have shaped the hardware, and are wholly unsuitable for any other. Discussing immigration, integration, British identity, and Islam with John Anderson AC on his podcast.
