It found the artificial shell much prettier and moved in without a second thought.

This is a great look at a hermit crab's "hardware upgrade" process. But the caption's idea of "prettier" is a human projection. The reality of what the crab is doing is far more complex and impressive. Crabs must find new shells as they grow. It's a constant, high-stakes real estate hunt. When they find a potential new home, they perform a sophisticated analysis, checking its key specs: Internal Volume (can I fit?) Weight (can I carry it?) Aperture Size (can I defend it?) Structural Integrity (is it damaged?) This crab isn't an interior decorator; it's a field engineer running a diagnostic on a potential new chassis. It ran the numbers on this artificial shell, and the data came back positive. The colors are irrelevant; the specs are perfect.

Smoking Crab 🦀🚬😭

It's this mf

If you own hermits, always provide natural shells ONLY. There are chemicals in the paints/sealants that leach into their soft abdomen and gills. Hermit crabs are forced into bright, artificial shells so that they appear more “attractive” to buyers at beach shops + big box stores.

After 450 million years, horse-shoe crab still grows strong

I'll say this again because I've seen this video before, shells like this are really bad for hermit crabs.

The bird knows where it is more peaceful.

Hello my beautiful sludge creature!, I hope you're having fun sludging all over the place

Wonder if you gave him a natural shell, the size of the artificial one, if he would take the natural one or still decide to keep the artificial one.

Who knew?! Shell-Shocked!

Red-eared slider turtle had a gemstone stuck in his shell!

Checks it out and says “Yes! My naked behind will fit well in that lovely new home!” 😆

These beautiful shells belong to open ocean dwellers than spend their lives floating just beneath the seas surface in an inverted world.

Crab said ✨aesthetic over survival

I love Hermit Crabs. They're dumb little critters but cute as heck.

Crab saw the new shell and said, ‘That’s so me.’

Ummmmmm, he lost me at the long larva like body that he hides.

oh this diva is gonna be struttin

Bro said the natural light in this one is way better.

Is this micro plastics?

Natural shells only, it’s bad for them.

Painted seashells and stuff are not actually good for them. I guess if you want them to have a pretty show, either look for one or do some research on ones that have pretty. Shells, that look painted, but aren't.

Have you created this video? Mind blowing work. Great amount of patience is required for this.
