Warren Buffett on the single best thing an investor could have done in 1942: At a recent shareholder meeting, Buffett explains that he normally goes straight into questions and answers. But this time he opened differently, because he felt the usual format was teaching the wrong lesson. As he puts it, "all the questions would naturally tend toward current events." So he went back to 1942, the year he bought his first stock, to make a point about everything that has happened since. "We've had 14 presidents, seven Republicans, seven Democrats. We've had world wars. We had 911. We had the Cuban missile crisis. We have all kinds of things." His lesson? None of it should have changed what you did with your money. "The best single thing you could have done on March 11th, 1942 when I bought my first stock was just buy an index fund and never look at a headline, never think about stocks anymore. Just like you would do if you bought a farm. You just buy the farm and let the tenant farmer run it for you." Then he gives the number. Buffett describes putting $10,000 into an index fund that reinvested dividends, and he pauses to let the audience guess what it would be worth. The answer: "it would come to $51 million now." The only belief required back then was simple: "The only thing you had to really believe in then is that America would win the war and that America would progress as it has ever since 1776. And that American business, if America moved forward, American business would move forward." Notice what he says you did NOT need: "You didn't have to worry about what stock to buy. This gas station clerk took someone’s winning million dollar lottery ticket telling the customer it was worth nothing and threw it in the garbage. When the customer left, he took the ticket out of the garbage and tried to claim it at the lottery office as a win.Problem for him was of course everything had been caught on video. He maintained he found the ticket in the trash so he had rights to it . He was arrested, and the customer got their winning ticket back.!!

At Lowe’s in Norwich, New York, they told this guy he had to buy the moldy lumber first before they’d let him get to the good stuff. He went digging through the pile and found mold on pretty much everything. When he asked if they could pull down the clean two-by-fours from the top, they said no — not until all the moldy wood was gone. Here’s the part that feels off: This is wood meant for building walls and homes. If it’s already covered in mold, most people wouldn’t want to use it inside their house without treating it first. That means the customer would have to spend their own time and money to fix something that should’ve been clean and usable to begin with. Forcing people to buy the moldy stuff before they can access the good lumber just doesn’t seem right. Why should the customer have to pay extra to correct a problem that started at the store? Would you be okay with a store making you buy spoiled food items before they’d sell you the good ones? This feels like the same idea, just with lumber instead of food.

After he drank the ayahuasca… he felt himself sinking through all the geological strata of the Earth, and he told me… he had a total understanding of all of the processes that had laid them out through the eons. He ended up being propelled out the other side of the Earth and then floating through space for what he experienced as hundreds of years. He would focus on a distant planet and be transported there, and on each planet he would have an adventure and at the end there would be a lesson that he was supposed to remember. The last planet he visited, his mother was there. And she started passing through him, in and out of him again and again and every time she did that, he felt all these experiences of forgiveness, of love, of understanding, of comprehension, of empathy and compassion. When he came back from that trip, he was completely changed. He was very open about talking about his feelings, [but] the reason I really know that it changed him is he started taking out the garbage and doing the dishes. I have a friend who’s a Navy SEAL who had severe PTSD and he went to Costa Rica and had the same kind of experience. I have a couple of other friends who are in the NFL and they also had severe brain injuries and depression, and the same thing happened. I found an interesting video from when I was in Beijing three weeks ago that I had made. Nothing special as a video, except that it shows the juxtaposition of a portrait of Sun Yat-sen in the Square looking and directly at Chairman Mao. It’s fitting because they both hoped to create a republic and it seems that finally their dreams are coming true. 🇺🇸🇨🇳Modern China is grateful to both of them, one because he brought the thinking and tradition of the American system of Abraham Lincoln and the other because without him there would be no China today, he saved China from the imperialist Japanese.

In 2009, after two back surgeries, my doctors told me I would never walk again without the assistance of a cane or walker. I gave up. l wrote out my suicide note and was ready to end it all. But, in that moment, my three-year-old son Matthew walked into my bedroom and saved my life. I truly believe it was an intervention from God. After that moment, I cried out to God and told him that if he showed me the way, I would put in the hard work to dig myself out of that bed and dig my family out of poverty. My mindset changed. I used to see myself as a victim. I would ask myself "Why me?" After that moment, I started to tell myself "Why not me?" I worked hard to overcome the obstacles I faced in my life and I will work even harder to become the first black Republican elected to Congress in the history of Ohio.

In Goodfellas, when Joes Pesci's character Tommy shoots Spider, some of the actors wore earplugs to protect themselves from the gunfire. But Pesci refused - he wanted to hear the full blast of the gun, to immerse himself in the moment. He explains... “It was very hard for me to get as close to killing someone as possible in that scene, because it wasn't a contract killing, and it wasn't somebody that had to be…(it was) a kid. And some of the actors, even Bob (Robert De Niro) - they put earplugs in. But I wanted this feeling, this deafening feeling - I wanted to feel that gun ride and feel like it. And the kid that played Spider (Michael Imperioli) threw himself back so violently at the first shot that he went flying against the bar and cut his hand. They had to take him to the hospital.
