The problem is that the trend rate of growth has been falling for decades, in the US and every developed economy. It now sits around 1.75%. The reason is the part you can't change. The working-age population is shrinking. Fewer workers means a lower ceiling on growth, no matter what anyone does about it. So the economy leans harder and harder on the one lever that's left. Debt. And that's where the real story begins.
