I don't think we necessarily want a private army or private police force. I think there are certain things that are probably the right role for the government. But anything done by the government is going to be inefficient because the government is a monopoly. People that don't like corporations should not somehow think that the government is much better because the government is a corporation in the limit. It is the ultimate corporation with a monopoly on violence. So I think the right role for the government is to act in a regulatory capacity. But we should aspire to have the government be a limited actor in the economy. So you could say what percentage of economic output should be governed, maybe a third or something like that. Once you start getting above 50% government, I think that's problematic. You can look at countries like East and West Germany and North and South Korea, and there was just essentially an arbitrary line drawn out to divide the countries. And East Germany was 100% government. West Germany was probably at least 40% government – they're relatively socialist. And yet the GDP per capita of West Germany was, I think, five times higher than East Germany. So that just shows you just how big of a difference it is if you have something that's close to half government versus 100% government. The private sector is probably a factor of 10 more efficient than the government. If you have a monopolistic private corporation, then the forcing function for serving the customer is weak. But at least private corporations can go bankrupt, and the government cannot go bankrupt unless the people go bankrupt. AP CM Chandrababu Naidu launched a sharp attack on Jagan Mohan Reddy in the Assembly over BC reservations. “Jagan knows the law and understands litigation very well. How does someone supposedly holding a degree, having graduated from higher education, and occupying a professional or national government position reach that level while struggling to communicate competently in either Pilipino— the national language— or English, the principal international language? Was the curriculum taught entirely in Visayan? If so, is that really an acceptable standard for someone expected to function in national institutions? Regional languages deserve respect and preservation, certainly— but respect for linguistic diversity cannot become an excuse for the absence of functional competence in the languages required for national public service. A diploma or degree should signify more than completion; it should signify competence. Otherwise, what exactly are our schools certifying? Perhaps our national government start looking into this matter.
