Yesterday, the Supreme Court's conservative majority did something that voting rights advocates have feared for years: they weakened Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, one of the last major pillars of 60 years of civil rights progress. Section 2 was how we ensured Black, Latino, and other minority communities had a real shot at electing representatives who reflect their priorities. Now, to challenge a discriminatory map, you have to prove intentional discrimination. That is an almost impossible bar to clear. The Congressional Black Caucus could lose 30% of its membership as a direct result. Within hours of the decision, Republicans in Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, and Mississippi are already having conversations about redrawing maps. Partisan gerrymandering was already out of control. This decision just took the guardrails off completely. We have to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and establish independent redistricting commissions nationwide, and we need to do it now.

The Democratic Party, Gavin Newsom, JB Pritzker, and everyone else in safe blue states — pull up. If you’re serious about fighting Trump but ignoring Louisiana, we aren’t watching the same plays. In October, the Supreme Court will hear a case from here that could gut the Voting Rights Act and clear the way to end Black political power everywhere in America. Kevin Roberts, born and raised in Lafayette, built his foundation studying slavery in Louisiana and now runs The Heritage Foundation — the architect of Project 2025. Mike Johnson and Steve Scalise, both from Louisiana, run the U.S. House and are pushing that same agenda. Now Louisiana’s Attorney General has filed a brief asking the Court to strike down Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. If she succeeds, it could wipe out half the Congressional Black Caucus, erase Black legislative seats, and dismantle Black representation even in majority-Black cities — not back to 1964, but to 1877 at the end of Reconstruction. The Democratic Party should be camped out in Louisiana — not doing pit stops to check boxes. Every state isn’t shaping the nation the way Louisiana is. Ignoring Louisiana is how we got here. I believe voters should choose the best candidate. Period. I was the only Black candidate in my last Republican primary. I won without a runoff. Why?
