It is just so sad that the #NeurIPS2024 main conference ended with such a racist remark by a faculty when talking about ethics. How ironic! I also want to commend the Chinese student who spoke up right on spot. She was respectful, decent, and courageous. Her response was exemplary:...

I feel necessary to explain the rooted multi-layer racial bias in this incident and why (Chinese) people feel uncomfortable and offended. (1) Suppose the student example is true, the statement about "nobody at my school taught us values or morals" is just an excuse given by that student and shouldn't be taken at face value. Imagine that statement is about a US school, would you believe it? BTW, how are we sure the student is not talking about MIT (the school they were attending at that time)?

(2) There is no need to associate an incident with race. It is completely unnecessary. 👇

(3) The speaker clearly knew what she was saying, as the note shows she was aware of the "inappropriateness". Yet, she proceeded with a self-justification: "Most Chinese people I know are honest and morally upright". This is the classic "I have many XXX friends, so I can’t be racist" defense. But what about the Chinese people she doesn’t know? It’s both racist and arrogant.

(4) The speaker's followup response is even worse and reinforces her bias. When the girl asked a question and provided an opportunity for the speaker to clarify, she answered with "maybe there is one, maybe they are common, who knows what."

(5) The most ironic is that the speaker, @RosalindPicard, was giving a keynote talk at #NeurIPS2024 about AI ethics as the expert in that field. It clearly violates the code of conduct of NeurIPS.

Today, we remember Reyhaneh Jabbari, a 26-year-old Iranian woman EXECUTED for defending herself against RAPE. Imagine facing death simply for saying "No"! Western women, stand with us in amplifying Reyhaneh’s voice and all women in Iran who risk everything for their dignity and rights. #ReyhanehJabbari #WomanLifeFreedom

This is an interesting case when AI is better than human expert in ethics.

I suspect that she was doing it with intentions. As a full professor at MIT, she must understand the wrongdoing of her slides. The only logical explanation is that she did not expect any confrontation as Chinese community is typically viewed as silent, soft and not outspoken. Thankfully it’s no longer true.

this long ig post by one of yejin’s fans 🥺 “i have liked actress son yejin since 2019, and since there were hardly any official events, i was only able to meet her last year at BIFAN.” “even though i was a fan seeing her for the first time, she naturally smiled brightly at me, and even when the crowd was overwhelming and chaotic, she still greeted everyone with a smile. although she might not have been able to sign autographs due to the large number of people, when the crowd thinned, she warmly answered fans’ questions with a big smile.” “she even recognized and called the names of fans she hadn’t seen for years, and she remembered where fans from various countries abroad had come from. also, during the mega talk at the BIFAN, i had the chance to raise my hand and ask her a question. i was so nervous that i was trembling and even sobbing, and by the end, i was shouting ‘i love you’ with tears in my eyes.” “in response, actress son yejin also teared up with me. is it insincere to tear up so quickly at a fan’s tears? after i gave her a letter, i even received a reply and a certification on instagram stories. if she was someone who ignores fans who approach her... would she respond to a letter? if she was an actress who doesn’t greet fans, she wouldn’t read and reply to letters like this. is it insincere to even acknowledge and certify fan letters? if she ignored fans, why would she give encouragement to one person?” “watching videos of son yejin is my joy. but since this controversy broke out, most of the videos are flooded with hateful comments. it’s so painful every time i see them. please stop hurting people.”

Why is it that I’m never there when all the fun things happen at the airport. Most of the time I only see entitled passengers or screaming kids. I would be hilariously entertained if I saw a woman ducking and dodging security while wearing running shoes like she’s was in the NFL. This woman was having an argument with the airline, she felt they were being unreasonable, that was the only explanation she gave. So she jumped behind the counter and said what she needed to say only to be met by security and she gave them a run for their money. Imagine being the guard who took a dive trying to catch her, I bet all his coworkers never let that down. Closest thing I ever seen to this was a teenager who “accidentally” picked up the wrong bag on the floor got up and left. The woman who owned it noticed moments later and saw the girl casually walking with the bag. She took off after her, when she finally caught up to her they left all common sense at the door because the woman started screaming at her and calling her a thief while trying to get the attention of security. The teen kept saying it was her bag. It wasn’t until security got there that they realized she did grab the wrong bag and that hers was kicked under the seat. The odd thing is, her bag looked nothing liked the one she took so it was hard to say if it was intentional because she did after all left her own bag with her stuff in it too. What about you, have you ever seen anything happen at the airport? I must take the boring airlines, I always miss out on the fun incidents.

Amanda addresses her DUI arrest and her cult background. When the interviewer first brings it up she says, “I feel like a lot has been circulating online about you, including your past. Is there any big misconception out there that you want to set the record straight on?”and Amanda responds, “I mean, do you want to ask me directly?” 😳 Awkward. The interviewer then asks about Amanda’s past arrest and her involvement in a cult. Amanda starts by addressing the DUI mugshot, explaining that it happened in 2016 and was dismissed and expunged. She says she did not leave her parking space but attempted to move her car because the parking lot was closing. Amanda explains that a man who had been hitting on her all night told her, “you shouldn’t drive.” She says her car was boxed in by other vehicles, so she could not actually move it anyway. She called an Uber, and as she was about to get in, a police officer approached and said that the man claimed she was drinking and driving. Amanda says she was honest with the officer and explained she was only trying to move her car, but she was still arrested. Regarding the cult allegations, Amanda says she has a background in ministry, holds two Bible school degrees, and was involved in a church for two years that was “highly controlling, isolated, very manipulative” and says “it fits every criteria for a cult.” She adds that it was not a secret and that she has written about it before, saying, “it wasn’t dirt to dig up.” #RHOBH Source: Access Hollywood | Housewives Nightcap
