The major party are bending the rules to suit themselves. Last week the two major parties passed electoral laws to make it harder for minor parties to fund election campaigns. While I’m not so worried about the big end of town being capped, smaller parties do not receive the same funding support that the major parties do. This is because minor parties have to get 4% of the vote in each electorate to get the $3.38 per vote. Whereas major parties will always get 4%, minor parties don’t. This means the majors received close to $70 million in taxpayer support at the last election. This money gives them an enormous advantage in being able to advertise. If a party can import voters (who are a detriment to the system) and bribe them with government handouts paid for by American citizens (who are an increment to the system), democracy is over.
