It performs as good as it looks! Definitely a step up from last week's muscle design.

😏

*sigh.... checks comments

Haha I just saw them

My initial reaction too lol

freaky ass actuator

It's a bit freaky for sure I want to see what a bundle of them are capable of

Looks oddly familiar. JK Great work!

Haha thanks! It is a bit like a finger trap isn't it?

This looks crazy with the skin on it, reminds me of some sea creature

True! We can build electric eels, finally.

This didn't turn out to be what the first glance at the video suggested... 😀

Haha, it's for robotics I swear!

How long until you can create myomer strands for a 40 foot tall battle mech

@FolioTendApp I'd love to build those to be honest.

2.6 million views for your robussy doing kegels. You love to see it.

Giving the people what they want haha 😄

😂 true, true

@techsavvytravvy I'm seeing a vision I'm wondering if I'm the only one

queue the west world intro

We're getting closer each day.

Cool. I have questions thow. What’s going the solution for half or partial extended. Over time the solenoid will generate heat how are you planning on keeping it extended? With out using a lot of current and making heat?

Varying the current will provide positional control over the actuator's coil. With a moving magnet config, it's a little more difficult to do. That, and the braid kind of forces it back to the resting position without power. My plan is to bundle several muscles together, and operate them in a staggered way to reduce the load and duty cycle on each one. It's temporary for now.

What is it for?

How the heck? An electric muscle? I didn’t even realise that was possible. All the ones I’ve seen are air powered. What kind of force do you get out of it? And how does it work?

Yep! It's all electromagnetic! It's pretty powerful for It's size, and delivers a few N of force. The advantage is we can bundle several together to get more force to drive a load.

Awesome. When you say bundle though… how do you mean? Just a longer solenoid with more turns + higher voltage right? Or is there another way of doing it?

I can't wait for the eventual muscle driven 3d printer

That'd be really cool to see. I feel like you'd need some really small and precise muscles working together. Could make for a neat 5-axis machine...

Nice. Looks like how a young dragonfly nymph moves underwater. They'll shoot water from their rear. They'll draw water into their rectum where specialized gills extract oxygen from it, and when they need to make a quick escape, they'll forcefully expel the water out of it.

So, is this essentially the same thing a voice coil/speaker like a subwoofer does but extended linearly?

Pretty much yeah! There's a few more design requirements for them to be useful actuators, but they operate very much the same.

Are there limitations to how small they can be made and still be relatively powerful?

I suppose it depends on how power dense you want them with respect to stroke length. The gauge of wire used in the coils makes a huge difference too. More amp-turns = greater force. I'm making some much larger and much smaller muscles soon.

Very interesting

@DanielleFong Put it in ur butt and report back

Anyway to make it girthier and attach it where my penis is? I’m not saying anything just wondering how advanced the science is. How much would something like that cost?

Wha... What're we up to here?

wowww

@unclehive can you think of any business use cases here?

I can think of an immediate application for this stunning new technology.

I bet you can 😁

i should call her

pindonga tech avanza so fast @DaffyHellman

Does it do in between states as well or is it just 0 and 1?

It can move to other positions as well, just by varying the current in the coil.

Really cool!

Thank you!

I think that a design of a robot using this kind of muscle would be much more compact than the ones where pneumatic muscles are used.

That's the goal! Electric muscles are super easy to control and scale.

... well there's a whole market if it's intended purpose doesn't work out

This could help so many amputees

Expecting this in 10 years or so

incredible progress, the movements are becoming more organic on every iteration

I'm hoping to get them smoother yet! The real fun begins when we bundle muscles together.

are you going to attempt to scale up or down with these or is this the target scale?

I'm scaling in both directions! I've got a bunch of yokes ordered for micro-size muscles for fingers and massive muscles for things like legs.

giant humanoid robots

wait hows this working

It's all electromagnetic

yea no i mean whats in the tube. is it just a coil with a rod in it?

I’m not gonna even fucking open the comments I know exactly what I’m gonna see
