As the government shutdown entered its fifth day, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told Margaret Brennan that Republicans remain willing to negotiate on extending health care subsidies but insist Congress must first reopen the government. Johnson criticized Democrats for demanding the extension of those subsidies before they negotiate to reopen the government, saying those subsidies don’t expire until Dec. 31, giving lawmakers time to debate reforms: “We have time to do it.” Asked whether he wants the tax credits to be extended at a future date, he added, “No, I haven’t staked out a position on it yet.”
