it really sucks how nobody on here really understands classic RE plots and just says "erm hes right actually theyre bad" when they still WORK and have emotional beats that work as stories, they're just campy camp isn't meant to be so bad it's good, it's sincere but wacky

Resident Evil at it's core since the PS1 days was always meant to be a tribute to horror of the past decade, both in its camp and terror aspects the fact people can't get past this and just writes the plots of 1-3 off as "bad" astounds me when they probably havent even played it

i cant really blame capcom (entirely) or creger for this since really this is just an issue with audiences in general nowadays but people are too irony poisoned to really appreciate something sincere at its heart yet executed in a silly way problem is we're stuck in this era of-

-RE now where things don't really have much of a balance and it's like 90% serious with 10% corporate mandated silly moments like we saw with leon in requiem because that's accepted by the fans i guess. Even 4, 5, 6's direction, they were more action, but still didn't-

-constantly wink at the camera for everything kinda dumb like they do nowadays. these games just take themselves too seriously now

People nowadays are so irony stricken that they mistake "simple" with "bad" and "by the numbers" as "shallow." They don't even understand why the series is "funny" anymore. They just think that something ridiculous happening= lol it's a comedy now.

yeah, all the responses on that thread boil down to this:

I don’t like how people put them down as “haha one liner and bad voice acting” games and use that as a defense for the newer movies or to clown on the games

Thank you!!!! We have lost sincerity. Because we have too many people in fandoms and the hobbies that are absolutely embarrassed by it. That's everything must be an ironic joke. Tourist is a great insult because they trash, and laugh at the thing you love because they don't care

Without camp, Resident Evil stories have no punchline.

This is no longer about the movie, it's just about the western "FANDOM"'s, neurotic attachment to the series. Which demands reverence from all corners like all FANDOMS because you are retarded pants-pissing autistic children who imprinted onto dumb plastic shit like baby ducks.

Barry dropping the rope he was going to use to save Jill (trapped in a hole) down said hole and then going "Now I done it!" Yeah that's dumb but I laughed my ass off and I remember it fondly. Camp is good for the soul.

You don't get it man, everything has to be ironic and never take itself seriously, like dude, he's right behind me isn't he!

This is why older media in general is being compared favorably to modern media. A lot of modern writers denounced the idea of sincerity in campiness in favor of either unrelenting irony & hollow emotional sincerity.

Praying to god if the megaman movie escapes development hell ,it ends up being both camp and serious

Like, not every video game story has to be worthy of a Hugo Award. And just because the stories of RE games aren't literary achievements, doesn't mean a good screenwriter can't adapt them to be such for the screen. Some good comic book movies are based on comics that aren't great

Cosmonaut (like most of the internet) has a real problem with camp, or aesthetics that aim for deliberate middle ground between serious and comedic *as a whole*, rather than in distinct tonal shifts.

It's like saying Dawn of the Dead is campy and corny, therefore Dawn of the Dead and Shaun of the Dead are the same thing.

It's sadder when you have long time fans go with it to remain "hip and cool" with the new gen fans. I'm part of the fans that grew up on the series since OG RE1 and just enjoyed the story without acting like they were these Shakespearian masterpieces.

cosmonaut wasnt saying the camp is the problem. he said that resident evil is not known for its great story. Its shown that when they did try to adapt the games story [welcome to raccoon city] it failed. The plot is the weakest part of the resident evil games and that is okay

What I find funny is they'll say the old games have bad stories but then glaze new games which actually have terrible stories.

It boils down to people thinking games aren’t serious art. The movie could have the exact same script as the original RE2 and people will swear the movie has the better story

Really liked this clip. What video is this from?

My theory is that Some people are just not meant to consume narrative storytelling in the format of video games and they need to be spoonfed everything through cutscenes and forced walking talking segments

Yeah and overall i dont like when there is something to be ashamed of with the source material you like, its why i refuse to think the 2000s xmen movies have any any say on whats good or not from xmen

Nobody is really saying that RE game stories are outright bad, just that they are very clearly only the third most important thing behind characters and then gameplay. If you were to try and make a 1:1 adaptation of any RE as a movie or TV show, it would be a 6/10 at best.

I'm bad at identifying what stuff is "camp" I just take everything seriously

That's why the boulder punching in RE5 works. Its campy yes, but Chris is so determined to not lose another partner, he somehow gets the strength to punch the shit out of it. Its funny yes, but it also shows the type of man Chris is

I agree with you but it's not like they're that amazing at it either. Aboce all they're nice and intrusive means of context for the gameplay and there's nothing wrong there. (Except Resi 4, the og; that one I still defend as a horror comedy hybrid home run)

You would think they're insulting the game's storyline to defend something layered and with depth, yet the movie's plot and character are one dimensional at best and it completely misses the tone of the franchise.

This. I like resident evil, it’s scfi-Tubi horror shit in a game in all the best ways.

You don't hate normies enough

I too can say the Shining didn't have a good story But saying buzzwords means absolutely nothing unless I give evidence to back my claim These people are retarded

That doesn’t make the movie worse for not being a Point At The Screen Fest like some “fans” wanted RE2 is the only one that genuinely works in its original form; RE5 and RE6 don’t really work at all there, even RE4’s plot is more of an excuse for setpieces

its not camp it's schlock

And when you call them out for being contemptuous, they'll prove your point by doubling-to-quadrupling down and even drag other games into the "bad stories" claim, as well. Got so many replies running defense with some even stating that Devil May Cry has always been "bad".

ugh idk batman and robin is considered campy and its one of the most obviously trying to be comedic movies and sucks ass
