It seemed that NASA had stopped making its usual eclipse-related animations and visualizations over the last several eclipses, including 2024. But here's a new one they just released showing the global shadow path of next month's total solar eclipse.

What's Missing From This Solar Eclipse? 🌞🌖 Have you ever stopped to think that when you see a solar eclipse, you never see the moon before or after the eclipse? Most people don't. What we see is a black circle appearing out of nowhere and moving across the face of the sun. The point being, a solar eclipse is not what they taught you in school. Nobody knows exactly what it is, but without a doubt, it's not the moon blocking out the sun.

The solar eclipse and its video recording took place on July 22, 2009. Banaras (Varanasi), one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, has a history dating back to the 11th century B.C. Ancient Indian scholars such as Aryabhata and Bhaskara had developed advanced astronomical knowledge, including the ability to predict solar eclipses, long before Newton. They understood that the Earth is spherical and revolves around the Sun, indicating that the heliocentric concept existed in India thousands of years ago.

You could witness an annular solar eclipse tomorrow! (If you’re in Antarctica, that is. 🥶) Starting at 5:48 a.m. EST on Tuesday, Feb. 17 (that’s 6:48 p.m. local time at Antarctica’s Concordia Station), an annular solar eclipse will be visible over part of Antarctica. Annular eclipses occur when the Moon blocks the Sun but doesn’t appear large enough to cover the whole thing, leaving a “ring of fire” visible around the Moon. Places outside the path of annularity — including parts of Antarctica (like McMurdo Station), southern Africa, and South America —will see a partial solar eclipse, when the Moon blocks a portion of the Sun. Those of us in the Northern Hemisphere will be none the wiser — the Sun will appear normal like any other day. (But don’t look at it directly without proper solar viewing glasses!) Friday's release includes a total of 40 files — 14 documents, 19 videos, four audio files and three images. The files come from a variety of agencies: the Pentagon, NASA, CIA, FBI and Energy Department.
