South Dakota is taking unprecedented action to help tribes with their law enforcement needs and keep their people safe. In addition to hosting the first ever state tribal law enforcement training academy, I am also announcing that I am hosting the first ever Tribal Public Safety Crisis Summit in Pierre on June 24. We are inviting both elected leaders and law enforcement at the state, tribal, federal, and local level. It is my hope tribal leadership will take the opportunity to work with me to be an example of how cooperation is better for all our people.

On Monday, Director Kerner and Colonel Howze went to the legislature to express their concerns about the legislature's immigration bill. They asked for changes, including removing provisions that limited communication and coordination between state and local law enforcement agencies and federal partners, but this did not occur. This type of language in the bill creates vulnerabilities that could compromise officer safety and that will ultimately hinder the mission of illegal immigration enforcement. The legislature's bill does not consider critical operational needs that support law enforcement. Unfortunately, the legislature did not coordinate or communicate with our law enforcement agency while drafting their bill.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors took a first vote Tuesday to ban law enforcement from wearing masks. A second vote is needed and will happen December 9. If approved, it would ban local, state, and federal law enforcement from wearing masks in LA. Supremacy Clause of the Constitution says otherwise, as far as federal law enforcement is concerned. (ABC7)
