On Thursday, we broke ground at 41 to 43 Hanover Street in Central Kingston for a development that will forever change the lives of 83 residents including 38 children. For generations, this community has been marked by struggle, yet it has also held on to resilience and hope. Many residents have lived in aging, crumbling structures. Under the New Social Housing Programme’s Big Yard and Tenement Yard modality, some of these old conditions will give way to a modern three storey apartment complex complete with a commercial space to serve the area. During our Sebaashray camp in Nandigram, we learned about two young girls, Suparna Jana and Arpita Dalui, both suffering from complex heart conditions. Their families had been carrying the weight of this struggle, living with the uncertainty that accompanies such serious medical challenges. The moment their situation came to our attention, arrangements were made to send them to AIIMS, New Delhi, where they can receive the specialised treatment they require. Within our limited capacity, we have ensured that every aspect of their treatment is being taken care of, because no child’s chance at life and health should ever be constrained by economic hardship. My dream is that every landlord is responsive to their tenants and that every landlord is following housing code. And I know that there are many landlords who are like that. The issue, however, is that there are a number of bad landlords who have been able to operate with impunity, with no consequences for their actions. And part of what this housing plan puts forward is specifically funding to ensure that we can hold these kinds of landlords accountable, and especially the top 10 worst landlords in New York City, so that we can actually start to explore all of the tools we need to transfer ownership of those properties to people who will actually steward them safely, whether they’re a nonprofit, a community land trust, or the tenants themselves. We should make agreements with those countries to take these individuals in. But here’s the catch, once they agree to leave because the US is so “horrible”, they have to renounce their citizenship. We can then replace them with immigrants who want to assimilate and contribute to our country and build a better life for themselves as well.
