It was a normal day for this Uber driver. He’s been picking up and dropping off people all day. Everything was going fine for him until he picks up this woman. Off the bat he says she seemed a little weird and spaced out. He was talking to a... friend on a hands free headset when she stated that she felt unsafe with him in the car. So he pulls over and she calls customer service. She lies to customer service about not being able to go elsewhere because there is no business’s she can wait at for another Uber. She insists that customer service calls the police as well. She’s also refusing to leave his car because of a package in his trunk and claims she is afraid he might drive off with it. In a situation like this what do you do when she’s refusing to leave the car, do you just call the police yourself so they can remove her for you?show more

That lady was being absolutely ridiculous, and he appeared to have no intention of doing anything. I would have just called the place myself. I think he did the right thing putting her package out. Let her get out and go. It’s her problem. I think she was just trying to get a free ride.

I would not drive uber without a dashcam recording every ride. People are f’ing crazy. Poor guy.

If a passenger refuses to leave and creates a safety issue, calling the police is appropriate. Stay calm, avoid confrontation, and wait for authorities to handle it.

Pull in to the nearest public business. Turn off the car, taking the keys with you, open the trunk and remove her package. Place in on the curb and open her door calmly then walk back to driver side and turn car back on. Video everything

Let’s call this what it is — racial profiling. A Black driver doing his job, and suddenly she “feels unsafe” for no reason, lies to customer service, refuses to leave his car, and tries to get police involved? That’s not fear, that’s bias. False accusations like this put Black men in real danger. This behavior shouldn’t be tolerated. Safety goes both ways, not suspicion based on skin color.

I know people who have been Uber drivers. They say that people have gotten more strange with each passing year.

This is why I no longer drive. People have lost their minds. I drove through Covid…it was completely unbearable.

I'll bet anyone a dollar she is chemically enhanced. Whether it's illicit drugs or more likely prescription drugs, she's on something and trying to scam a free ride. I've seen junkies like this one so many times.

I would get out of the car, but leave that camera on. I would call the police that there is a mentally unstable woman in the car and I feel in danger. And then sue her ass for something, whatever the lawyer can figure out. What a crazy bitch.

That’s a tough spot, and yeah, once a passenger refuses to leave, you stop trying to handle it yourself. The safest move is exactly that: call the police yourself, stay calm, keep the car parked in a public, well-lit area, and let everything be documented. Don’t argue, don’t touch her, don’t drive anywhere. If there’s a dashcam, make sure it’s recording. Also end the trip in the app and report it to Uber immediately. At that point it’s no longer a rideshare issue, it’s a safety and trespassing issue. Calling authorities protects you and creates a record in case her story changes later.

That dissociative stare makes me think this is likely autism and she’s stuck in freeze (it’s fight, flight, or freeze). She’s calm, maybe quirky for a lot of people, but so is he. All the calls to ruin her are wild. These are human beings we’re living with and around, nobody got hurt, both were just inconvenienced, and it’s a huge learning experience for all of us. Mainly there’s a lot more people and situations I need to train my child with autism to prepare for than we imagine.

She's clearly a nut job. He handled this well. I hope Uber didn't penalize him. Is there any follow up as to how this ended?

Talking on the phone while driving could put safety at risk, and I get that a passenger might feel uncomfortable with it. Also, I’m not even sure what she actually heard. I once heard a driver tell his friend on the phone (in a language I understood) that he was only marrying “that fat b***h” to sort out his legal status and planned to leave her after. Some people would shrug and mind their own business; others wouldn’t. To me, when he began recording, we were only getting his version. We haven’t heard hers at all.

App showed you still in car, so driver can't do anything traceable. If you left & something happened, how would they know? Driver could claim he dropped her, turned off app, & went to lunch. You stayed in the car & called someone → have a witness. Not saying he would, but similar to him grabbing the camera to document, she called somebody. To me, she wasn't a Karen & wasn't demanding much once she felt safe. I'm not taking sides; just playing "what if." She looked young & inexperienced, maybe that's why she freaked out.

He handles it about as good as possible I guess. Crazy people out there. Both passengers and drivers can turn out odd. Good luck everybody.

And she gets away with it. They probably will comp her next Uber. From the depths of my soul, I cannot stand these women like this.
