As I said earlier, my understanding of the Playoff Bowl has always been that some players/coaches took the game more seriously than others. Here are some points that stood out to me: • Roger Brown — who played in five Playoff Bowls, the most of any player — states quite succinctly that "just to go to Miami was a thrill. You went down to bask in the sun, and play in a game that didn't mean anything". He later referred to it as "The Toilet Bowl". • Paul Warfield called it "a nothing game". • The game's origins were born from the NFL looking merely for "extra content" • It was essentially a league PR effort by commissioner Pete Rozelle, replete with golf and tennis tournaments; as I had stated yesterday, many players and coaches (and their families) saw it as nothing more than a vacation. Kind of similar to how players viewed the trip to Honolulu for the Pro Bowl years later. • Aside from Vince Lombardi's famous negative quotes about the Playoff Bowl, he (and other coaches) used the contests for evaluatory purposes of players. Again, sounds very similar to a preseason exhibition game in that respect. • Miami was seen as a testing ground for eventual Super Bowls and to probe public interest in pro football in hopes of eventually hosting a team (Dolphins).
