Today, it honors the ideas of liberty, democracy, and the pursuit of happiness that America was established on. 🇺🇸 The 4th of July means Freedom, and Freedom is the true meaning of life. It's important to remember that Freedom is not guaranteed and needs to be actively protected and preserved. Taking our #Freedom for granted can lead to a lack of appreciation for the sacrifices made by those who fought for it. Happy 4th of July everyone.

This is Mauritian Sega🩷🍵 It was created centuries ago by maroons and Africans that were taken and enslaved by Dutch to Mauritius (an African Island, that was largely uninhabited back then). It was created as a symbol of pain, resistance, happiness, and heritage It was performed by the enslaved in chains, which is why the feet rarely lift from the ground in the dance. While the island is now primarily of Indian descent due to the influx of South Indians brought to Mauritius as indentured servants, Mauritian sega is performed by all Mauritians. It's a symbol of freedom, created by the Black people taken from Mozambique 🇲🇿 and Madagascar 🇲🇬

The United States was built, structurally and economically, on the labour of enslaved Africans. The cotton that financed American industrialisation was picked by enslaved hands. Think about the audacity of that NO vote. A country that holds itself up as the beacon of freedom and democracy and human rights looked at a resolution acknowledging one of the greatest crimes in human history and decided that acknowledging it was a step too far.

So many people in America today do not understand what the cost of their freedom was. They reimagine our history through modern day filters and believe the worst of the men who founded it. They want the song changed because it's hard to sing or because it sings of the brutal beginnings of our country. They want our flag changed into something trendy and multicultural. They really don't understand it. Five generations now haven't had to actually fight for our soil, our Liberty. Some have gone and fought for other countries, But a dwindling few are still alive today that actually fought for the freedom of our own country. And the ones getting the most attention in the media today haven't fought for anything other than their social platform.

Today, I took my children to "The Garden of Khiam's Martyrs", a space founded by our hometown's municipality to honor the men of Khiam who fell to Zionist terrorism. Men who gave their lives so their people could live with dignity, heads held high, on their own land. There, I spoke to my children about who these brave men were, and why their sacrifice matters. Among them is their own grandfather, a Lebanese Army soldier martyred in 1977 at the hands of Zionist Israel. His name lives on in our memory, our values, and our sense of belonging. They learned about the historic Battle of Khiam in 2024, when the people and defenders of this town ensured that Zionist Israel would not occupy it. They learned that dignity is not granted, it is defended. This visit was not only about remembrance. It was about identity. About grounding my children in their history so they grow up knowing what it means to be a southerner of Lebanon: rooted in the land, loyal to the people, and ready, when history demands it, to give everything in defense of home and loved ones. This is how identity is preserved. This is how dignity endures. Our Khiam❤️
