David Letterman wanted Johnny Carson’s job. And Johnny knew it. That makes this 1991 conversation so interesting. Carson asks Letterman about NBC choosing Jay Leno to succeed him, and Letterman doesn't pretend he didn't want the job. He admits he would have liked it but he also makes it clear that he wasn't angry at Carson, Leno, or NBC. Then the conversation gets even more interesting. Letterman questions whether he could even do what Carson had done: host the same late night show for decades without eventually wanting something different. Looking back, we know how this story ended. Letterman went to CBS and built his own legendary late night run. But sitting there in 1991, none of that had happened yet. If you were Letterman, would you have taken the rejection personally, or used it as motivation to build something bigger somewhere else ?
