@Daniel_Rapaport @TheOpen @benbosk Rapaport, this is the single most nuanced post I have ever seen on this subject. This is what I ask for from my journalism. Respect to you.

@Daniel_Rapaport @TheOpen @benbosk Same pretentious naming system: 1) “THE Ohio st university” -Ohio st. 2) “The U” -Miami. 3) “The Open” -British Open.

He’s almost got it, but alas, is still wrong… If you’re “British”, you can be from any United Kingdom and British territory - not limited to the island of Great Britain (e.g. the Falklands). So the British Open held in Northern Ireland is still the correct terminology. He’s right about the Republic of Ireland though...

@Daniel_Rapaport @TheOpen @benbosk Look into the term the British Isles. Then look at the term Great Britain. Then look at the term United Kingdom. They are 3 different terms.

@Daniel_Rapaport @TheOpen @benbosk Britain is used informally to denote the UK. Great Britain is the island. Then there's the "British Isles" which includes Great Britain and the Island of Ireland. Here endeth the lessson.

@Daniel_Rapaport @TheOpen @benbosk Great Britain is an island Dan, the term Britain or British generally covers the UK not the island, saying Britain is an island isn't correct.

@Daniel_Rapaport @TheOpen @benbosk Royal portrush is in northern ireland. So factually it is still in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

@Daniel_Rapaport @TheOpen @benbosk I read a novel recently called Dead Solid Perfect that takes place in the early 80s about a fictional PGA tour player. It appears that people commonly used the term "The Open" back then... referring to the US Open.
