"It's a very subjective process, open to many non scientific influences." Diagnosing an individual with ADHD is a "subjective process" that may be "harmful", says Professor of Critical and Social Psychiatry at University College London Joanna Moncrieff.

Absolutely! For over a decade, I believed that bipolar disorder was a chronic, incurable chemical imbalance that required medication for treatment. When the medication failed to help, I felt hopeless. It wasn’t until I realized I had been misled that I began to find hope for recovery.

Your entire profession sits a top of a bedrock of that 🤣 Tell yourself that next time you fire out a personality disorder DX 🧐 ADHD is an executive function disorder and this can be “tested” in a scientific way. Executive function is a neurological fact.

She is brave and awesome 💚

I think the professor’s comments need to be aired with caution. Often a diagnosis ‘label’ for ADHD/Autism is the only way parents can get statutory support from a LA if their child is struggling with their learning. Happy to chat to share experiences. @ucl @joannamoncrieff

She might be confusing Proper/Improper diagnosis for what she is calling Subjective/Objective. When done properly, ADHD diagnosis can be quite objective and reliable. But I agree that it’s very often improperly diagnosed done to support the patient’s request for stimulant medications or because of healthcare provider lack of training and understanding.

So an underlying reduction in dopamine with structural and functional changes visible on scans are not in any way shape or form an underlying biological condition? Good to know.

Unfortunately, working in medicine doesn't exclude you from being ableist and wrong.

I find it such an odd take. Given that practically NO psych diagnosis can be proven, why does ADHD cause such distress and debate? Literally, you could be faking any of them. If this is the argument, then really all those people with the diagnosis they don’t want should be jumping for joy, and if this lady has diagnosed you with one you are not happy about, well, she’s undone herself. All of this applies to every diagnosis she has ever made. Literally, people’s liberty and freedom and sometimes their children are removed based on that which cannot be proven. Huge contradiction here, no? Can we have it all ways then? Apparently, we can!

Real diseases like cancer, covid, HIV, glaucoma & hepatitis etc are diagnosed with a medical test cus patients might not have any symptoms at all (asymptomatic) It's only psychiatry that's entirely concerned with symptoms alone because there is no disease 👀
