Birmingham City Council has applied for an injunction that could result in people who fly the Union flag or the St George’s cross from lampposts being jailed for up to two years. In the injunction application, Birmingham City Council specifically name the founders of Operation Raise the Colours. The council say they want to “protect public safety” and “community cohesion”. I wonder how Birmingham City Council thinks “community cohesion” will be improved by banning people from proudly flying the national flag of the country they live in? I fear they haven’t considered that it might have the opposite effect. Meanwhile, journalist Steven Edginton has found that Home Office staff have been provided with extensive mental health support due to the ‘triggering’ nature of the England flag — the flag of the country which they are meant to be running and protecting. spiked
