Let’s talk about Massachusetts — or as I like to call it, the People's Republic of Taxachusetts — where facts go to die and logic gets replaced with virtue signaling. So let’s break this down. The state is run by people who, apparently, think energy policy should be based on emotion and fairy tales rather than, you know, physics. Maura Healey yes, the same Maura Healey who stopped not one, but two major pipelines also shut down the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant. Why? Because nuclear, despite being one of the safest, cleanest, and most efficient energy sources on Earth, doesn’t fit the progressive narrative. That plant, by the way, was subsidizing electricity across the grid at 17 cents per kilowatt hour. Translation: it was keeping prices stable. But no —they shut it down so they could force everything into solar. Solar. A technology that is entirely dependent on whether or not the sun is out and your panels aren’t covered in snow —which, spoiler alert, happens in Massachusetts. And why? Because these people worship at the altar of green energy, regardless of what that means for cost, efficiency, or reliability. I have spent over two decades in politics, and that brings some experience and understanding. One thing I have noticed, and perhaps you have too, is what happens when someone stays in power for too long. Whether it is a panchayat president, an MLA, a Chief Minister or even a Prime Minister, prolonged power can create deep confusion. In a democracy, leaders come to power because of the people. They understand that power belongs to the people, and they are only entrusted with it. But over time, a dangerous shift can occur. Leaders begin to believe that power does not come from the people, but from themselves. When a leader believes power comes from the people, they remain humble, respectful and see every citizen as a partner, whether a businessman, a fisherman or a worker. However, when they start believing that power comes from them, arrogance sets in. The people around them reinforce this illusion, and gradually, the connection between the leader and the people breaks. The leader stops listening, and the people begin to feel ignored and disconnected. On this week’s Energy Capital Podcast, I spoke with Nat Bullard of Halcyon about the explosion of smaller batteries popping up across ERCOT. Small, distributed systems doubled from 2023 to 2024 and are now one of the fastest-growing trends in the state. ⚡ They’re consumer-driven. Policy helps, but most growth is happening because Texans want reliability, resiliency, safety, and control. ⚡ They create community resilience. As Nat said, “If you’re the only house on the block with power during an outage, your neighbors will notice and come charge up.” This isn’t just about hardware. Tim Pool: “I’m not licking the boot. It’s my boot. I voted for it. I’m the one stomping…” This mindset is genuinely pathetic. It’s an alpha fantasy: watching state violence and imagining you’re exercising power rather than the one submitting to it. In no reality is a lawless state you. It is not accountable to you. It is coercive by nature and indiscriminate in its application. The moment Tim Pool stops being useful—if he becomes a critic instead of a sycophant, decides an abuse has gone too far, or is simply in the wrong place at the wrong time—that same boot ends up on his neck. So, the daily and seasonal variations in power consumption mean that the United States, and really every country, is only producing about half as much electrical energy as it could. Because without batteries, there's no effective way to buffer the energy. So, what batteries actually enable is that even if you don't build any incremental power plants, you could double the energy output of the United States just with batteries. This is a super big deal. And, in fact, I think that's really where most of the incremental energy production in the United States is going to come from, is literally batteries.
