It's (always) a great day to cut titanium at Astranis Space Technologies.

@Astranis The raw material cost of the final part is like $10,000/kg. 😭

@Astranis The raw material cost of the final part is priceless 🥰

@Astranis Assuming the other 15.5 lbs is recycled and re-melted ?

@Astranis yep!

@Astranis Potentially dumb question, new to the mfg game, but is that done in house or third party ?

@Astranis We send it back to a third party, processing raw metal is pretty far outside our core competency :)

@Justin_Sosa_ @Astranis How much cheaper than buying a new equivalent block of material?

@Justin_Sosa_ @Astranis it's not really structured like that, basically we just get a modest refund on the original block

@Astranis Have you tried sheet metal-ing it?

@Astranis i approve the use of your specifically-colored latex gloves in the shop

@Astranis good but a bit slower in cadence compared to the pace of titans of cnc vids im used to

@Astranis The desloppification starts here

@Astranis That's great work, Christian! I love the VF machines. That would be an amazing part to 5-Axis window frame. I programmed a lot of 6AL-4V and 5553 Ti parts at and for Boeing planes and the window frame method is my favorite for anything made out of block or plate.

@Astranis How long does it take to edit a video like this?

@Astranis I bet every machinist just flinched watching this part…

@Astranis First machining video where I've seen someone use the elusive lollipop endmill - very nice!

@Astranis Where'd you get the titanium?

@Astranis California company called TMS

@Astranis @nikitabier How do I turn my feed into nonstop CNC asmr?

@Astranis Oh a HAAS 😳

@Astranis Insane. My dream is to have a small, tabletop cnc that can mill Ti/zirc/zircuti so I can make my own parts

@Astranis Very cool, I cant wait to one day machine titanium. BUT... 90% waste just seems inefficient. Why does it have to be 1 solid part opposed to 6 parts (bottom bracket, top bracket, 4 standoffs) all connected with titanium hardware (or even welded)?

@Astranis *salivating* 😍

@Astranis Very cool

@Astranis I wonder what design necessities needed it to be one piece of stock verses made out of 2 pieces of flat stock joined together.

@Astranis glorious 🤌

@Astranis Really cool to see! Please continue to make more of these!

@Astranis This is a great video! Simple, concise, and something I can show my friends who ask what machining is.

@Astranis Nice part - curious what surface finish you’re planning? It would look really sharp with an AMS 2488 Type II titanium hardcoat. Of course, I might be a little biased… since we just got NADCAP approval for our new Ti anodize line.

@Astranis Wow! Super cool!

@Astranis Curious what your radial engagement is. SFM is right on but feed seems slow. Part looks great regardless.

@Astranis Why not sheet bent?

@Astranis Never before have I been so enthusiastic for metal 3D printing. It all makes sense now

@Astranis @ej_sa I just know you'll love this

@Astranis Forge it.

@Astranis Intriguing.
