"It's an important conversation. We gotta have it." Just finished a Zoom interview with David Dastmalchian for LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL. Asked him about the use of the 3 AI images in the film. Filming was a couple years ago. Premiered at SXSW in 2023. All prior to...

I don’t understand why they wouldn’t just swap out the images with new artist made ones once it became clear this shit would be toxic to the goodwill of the film. This feels like a lot of deflecting and not addressing the real problem.

I can’t believe people are making a mountain out of mole hill for this…truly small stuff.

They say the film is original but the "art" used in it, isn't. A/I images are made from stolen work, nothing about it is original and the fact that they don't care. Makes me not care about this film, you don't respect artist then ditto to you too. Not going to see the film.

love you David kiss kiss but also they really should just change it. If they're aware now of the problems surrounding AI then just edit in different transitions dude

Exactly what I’ve been saying. EVERYONE was testing this shit out back then. It’s not a big deal.

Disappointed to learn that #AI was used in this film instead of traditional human creativity. Looks like a great movie, but as a #digitalartist who works in the film industry, I'm gonna pass on this one. Big fan @KevinMcCarthyTV. #LateNightWithTheDevil

There's no excuse. If stealing from artists becomes the norm in movie-making it will ruin the movie-going experience very quickly, even for the people who today think this is not a big deal...

They experimented with AI. People can experiment with not going to the movie.

Andrzej Zulawski on why 'The Devil" (1972) was an important movie for him & the advice Andrzej Wajda gave him: "'The Third Part of the Night' (1971) was extremely important being the first film of course, but also for the way it is written. The flashbacks, the cuts or whatever, and the essence of the story is essentially the story of my father. Starting with that I really wanted to say Hello, I know, we know…we remember…je me souviens…like in Quebec. Stylistically it was not for me any kind of breakthrough into a different way of filmmaking, and 'The Devil' (1972) was. Wajda told me once, maybe one of the two things he said which I keep with me today, he said: "Look…be careful because the first day of the shooting of your new film, independently of the time which has passed between the two, will be the last day of the film which you just did before.” It’s so right, and so when we started 'The Devil', first day I remember, we started with this travelling shot, this elegant photography because 'Third Part of the Night' is elegant visually, anyway for me; then I said “Oh God, something is radically wrong…forget the rails, take the camera in hand and let’s do the film like a documentary about a bloody dream in which the history of Poland collapsed, etc. etc.” We did the film almost entirely with hand-held camera so it was a radical departure stylistically from the first film. This break was most important to me than anything later on, in technique." (Zulawski's interview with Donato Totaro, Offscreen, 2013)
