It's as simple as making a pen that can't write hate speech - it's really that easy guys!

Half the people in government have an IQ less than 100, telling engineers with *minimally* a full standard deviation higher how to design complex systems is comic.

It's like making a law to prevent cars from driving to Nevada

Problem solved

I agree with your point, but the politician's terrifying response will be 'well just put a camera on every printer'. and you'll point out 1 million loopholes, and they'll write 1 million regulations... The system is just going to break is all.

Gcode can easily be rendered as a 3D model. Then geometry analysised.

The 3D printer itself won't know what's going on, but newer 3D printers have built-in cameras with AI that detects problems when printing, and can shut down the printer which saves you filament Those cameras will be monitored for gun shaped prints, and can be shut down remotely

Do not make a chocolate mold on your 3D printer. The microspaces between layers are impossible to clean, and chocolate will stick in the molds.

Using all My strength to write a slur with the new mandatory anti-hate speech pen

They will demand a always online connection because they will use AI, then the shitty AI flag you for terrorism if you try to print a offset plate to test for the printers offset/shrinkage of the filament. because it thinks that offset plate is a gun part

"There is no way to interpret what is being printed" Have you never heard of a gcode viewer? You can literally import the sliced gcode back into the slicer to get a preview YOU LITERALLY SHOW THIS PREVIEW??? Come on bruh

I hate that this is even a discussion. I hear inkjets are somehow pre-programmed to somehow detect/block if some knucklehead tries to print US currency also.

My slicer can also turn a set of instructions back into a picture. That picture can be processed by a external service that looks for non-approved shapes. The regulators don't care about a ton of false positives, in fact, they look at those as an indication of success.

Its an incredibly stupid idea. Trust is a two way street and its becoming increasingly clearer every day that the government does not trust its workers and gen pop.

im still waiting for such a law to pass..

My state is trying to do this. I have been a 3D printing enthusiast for just over a decade and sent a letter of opposition to my representatives to make my voice heard. The whole bill is written with clear tone and verbiage indicating they have no idea what is possible.

They probably intend to train LLMs with gun-model data to find patterns in the G-code to throw errors when something is vaguely gun-shaped

If you're willing to destroy all of modern society in order to disarm people, then protecting society clearly isn't the goal.

You can use G code mixed with Macro Variable statements and math formulas to reduce the amount of code needed or in this case, get around any kind of silly “g code detecting” whatever.

The people who come up with these laws don’t know how anything works. It might as well be magic.

Actually it's easy. Make a file that contains any possible g-code that results a part of a firearm. Store the file on a government server aaaaand no more government

The silver lining is that a lot more people will realize that these idiot politicians will write legislation despite being entirely incompetent to do so and whether it makes any sense or not.

LLMs will most certaintly be able to train on these as data and model a statistical likelihood of it having firearm-compatible features. it's not right. I don't wan't it to. It's not what I pay for when I get a printer -- but the capability is coming.

Gcode is free speech

If it's 3D printed, it's trash.

Digital devices, printers, 3D printers and the like should always just unquestionably do exactly what the user says. Jailbreaking is always good.

I heard they're going to build a database of known 3D gun files and check the hash of what you're printing against the database. It would slow down normal prints because everything will need to be checked and wouldn't catch most because a tiny change changes the hash.

The gcode can be remade into a 3d model

They'll probably use intermediary apps like Chitubox to secretly report you.

Next they're going to mandate smarter printers that can render what they're printing.

a pen that cannot write hate speech would be simpler, actually

Yeah, it’s the slicer that has to do the detection

I can't wait to get arrested for printing a the hollow tube for my filament spool or my toilet paper holder because it thinks it's a gun barrel

You can actually visualise the Gcode. And try to guess the purpose of the object. But (using your analogy with a pen and hate speech) you will just not write it all at once.

the point is to restrict machining from being used by the common man.
Yes, but no
