What do you get when an area holding millions of pounds of trash gets flooded? An environmental disaster. That’s exactly what has happened at Thousand Acres Dog Park, now the site of a long-standing homeless encampment. For years, people have been allowed to live in this floodplain. But more critically, they’ve been allowed to haul in and stockpile millions of pounds of trash—much of it having nothing to do with survival or camping. When the river floods, all of it moves: plastics, human waste, chemicals, propane tanks, batteries—straight into the river system. The most disturbing part? Local government has known about this for years and did nothing. This wasn’t unforeseen. It wasn’t sudden. It was enabled. This isn’t compassion. This isn’t tolerance. This is environmental negligence, and the damage doesn’t stop at the encampment—it flows downstream.
