I reluctantly embraced the term “queer” because I was told we were reclaiming a derogatory slur. I was told it’s an umbrella term. I don’t believe that anymore. It’s becoming increasingly clear to me that not only is it a term almost anyone can appropriate for themselves to score brownie points amongst certain crowds, but it’s also become a political identity rather than one that simply describes someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity. That’s not something I identify with. So call me gay. Call me LGBT. don’t call me “queer.”
