It’s crazy how often I hear people complain that cyclists don’t stop at stop signs, often with the subtext that cyclists don’t deserve bike infrastructure. Do they really not realize that drivers roll through stop signs all the time too? Do people just not notice that?

I’m just fascinated by the perception here, how people can complain about “rule-breaking cyclists” when nearly every driver speeds. (Try driving the speed limit on a highway: you’ll be constantly passed!) It feels like people genuinely think it doesn’t count if you’re in a car.

When drivers roll through a stop sign at 5km/h in a 3000lbs vehicle with huge A-Pillars blocking vision and tinted windows, nobody cares. When I roll through a stop sign at 5km/h with perfect sight lines 200lbs and ability to turn on a dime everyone loses their minds.

Yeah but "they stopped" is what I have seriously heard from car drivers when you show them a video like this. Crazy.

we need to indefinitely pause all freeway widenings until drivers learn to follow the rules
You've never had to listen to an entitled person complain about the things they hate before? It's what they do.

I know how it goes, I have to deal with YouTube comments

I would have no problem with bikers slowing and going at stop signs on light traffic roads like cars often do. The problem is the bikers don't slow down whatsoever and also blast through red lights.

The slowing down part is complicated by the fact that drivers are usually going much faster in the first place, so of course they're going to have to slow down more. I'll grant you that, different from stop signs, running red lights is more common among cyclists than drivers.

No you see it’s different because the cars weigh on average 200x as much and have worse visibility which is…better?
