He told them to have fun too. Last time his tariffs cost the taxpayers $28 billion in subsidies to farmers. This offset the revenue collected but Trump is doubling down because he didn't learn from his past mistakes. Neither did the farmers because they voted for him yet again.

When I took over Dept. of Agriculture, we found taxpayer dollars funding grants on "racial injustice" in the pest control industry, research on queer and BIPOC farmers in San Francisco, and studies on transgender menstrual cycle issues. That wasn't serving America's farmers and ranchers. So we canceled those grants, called off 900 DEI trainings, and began reorganizing USDA to refocus the Department on its core mission. That was a good start—but there is much more work to do. For too long, Washington prioritized a radical political agenda over the people who feed, fuel, and clothe our nation. Meanwhile, input costs soared, family farms struggled, and in 2023 America became a net food importer for the first time in generations. Our measure of success is simple: prosperous farmers and ranchers, a stronger rural America, lower costs, and restoring America's food security. 🇺🇸🧑‍🌾

Farmers are unhappy today. Trump’s choice to import over 661 MILLION POUNDS of beef without tariffs is just one more slap in the face to our farmers. And it's not going to do one thing to lower prices for consumers. "Record cattle prices" are offset by record-high input costs for feed, fertilizer, and diesel, to name a few. Add in the damage from the droughts, fires, and floods, and margins are razor-thin. We need to pass a Farm Bill that supports small and medium-sized farmers, make sure they have a seat at the table, and elect leaders who truly understand farmers are the backbone of America.
